But it is also an intuitive, easy-to-use, well-designed, effective, and, dare I say, fun at-home workout device? Absolutely. In case it wasn’t already clear, I am obsessed with the Mirror (and, rest assured, I purchased this device on my own, so you trust me when I say these are my honest, unbiased thoughts).

Because if there’s one thing we all wish we had more of in a workout class, it’s control over the tunes. Within the app, you can also adjust the instructor’s volume and select your background music with the option to choose between the Mirror’s preloaded genre-based mixes (which definitely hold their own) or your own Spotify or Apple Music soundtrack. It also tracks your progress, recording what classes you’ve taken and completed, how many calories you’ve burned, and how close you are to achieving your weekly goals.

The app itself (available for both iOS and Android users) functions as the “remote” for your Mirror and is how you’ll select and schedule your classes. Even cooler? The screen will also show you the names and locations of other people who are taking the same class as you (don’t worry, you can’t actually see them, and they can’t see you), which helps recreate that same feeling of comradery you would get in a regular in-person class. You can also customize your screen to display a host of performance-related data generated by your profile information or a paired fitness tracking device (like Apple Watch), including your calories burned, heart rate, and the amount of time left in each set. It’s basically like scoring a front-row spot at your favorite workout class but without having to feel like you’re center stage. Once you select your class via the companion app, a live instructor actually appears alongside your reflection on the screen, making it easy to mirror (no pun intended) their exact moves and receive the occasional motivational shout-out. While that may not sound all that impressive given the sheer number of fitness streaming apps and online classes available everywhere from your smartphone to your tablet, rest assured the Mirror takes things to a whole new interactive level.

Behind its sleek, minimalist design lies a complicated bit of machinery (including a built-in microphone and forward-facing camera) that allows it to double as a Bluetooth-enabled LCD screen capable of streaming thousands of on-demand and live workouts led by professional instructors. At first glance, the Mirror looks like, well, just that: a full-length mirror.
